Police in Newark are investigating a shooting that occurred near the border of Newark's Central and West wards overnight.
According to police, University Hospital officials contacted police when a male victim entered the emergency department suffering a bullet wound around 3 a.m.
Police say officers were dispatched to the vicinity of Avon Avenue and South 19th Street for reports of shots fired just before 1:15 a.m. and found evidence that a shooting occurred, but police units canvassed the scene and did not find any victims.
Authorities believe that the victim was shot at the Avon Avenue crime scene but are continuing to investigate.
There were no other injuries reported.
