Newark South Ward School Locked Down after Gunfire Erupts Several Blocks Away

A Newark South Ward elementary school was locked down after gunfire rang out in a neighborhood Monday morning authorities said.

Police responded to reports of shots fired that erupted in the area of Clinton Place and Renner Avenue at around 11:30 a.m.

Multiple police units canvassed several blocks in the area where they came across shell casings and vehicles struck by bullets according to reports.

Evidence found in the St. James Place area had cops contact school administrators at the George Washington Carver Elementary School and order a full lock down of the school.

School administrators and staff were credited for an efficient lock down that they conduct drills for and randomly practice several times during the year officials said.

The lock down was lifted by Newark Police a little after noon where students, staff, and parents were informed of what occurred.

Police at the crimes scene located several shell casings, but there was no word of any injured victims.

The school day resumed with no further interruptions according to interruptions.

Police are searching for the suspects who fired the weapons.
