Essex County Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the city's South Ward overnight.
Police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Chancellor Ave. and Maple Ave. where they found a vehicle that had crashed into a fire hydrant with several bullet holes in it. A search of the vehicle and the area did not locate a victim.
A short time later, several blocks away, a male victim reportedly flagged down EMS just outside of Newark Beth Israel Hospital where he was shot in the stomach. The man was immediately taken into surgery where we were told by family members that the male victim did not survive.
The identity of the victim will be released by The Essex County Prosecutor's Office later today. The fatal shooting was the second in Newark overnight.
