Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced this morning’s arrest of a Newark man who was in possession of a gun and a bullet proof vest.
According to Director Ambrose, members of the Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Team, commonly referred to as (FAT), responded to Stratford Place in search of Newark resident, **Altarick Goldsmith, 20 of Newark,** who was wanted for shooting two teens earlier this week near the intersection of Avon Avenue and Somerset Street. Both victims were treated at UMDNJ for non-life threatening injuries.
Detectives from the Department’s Cease Fire Shooting Response Team immediately started to gather evidence and follow leads which enabled them to secure a warrant for Goldsmith’s arrest.
Immediately after learning that the Shooting Response Team had identified Goldsmith as the shooter, FAT detectives started to gather information about where Goldsmith frequents and locations he is commonly known to sleep. Using this information, Goldsmith was arrested shortly before 7am, sleeping in an apartment located on Stratford Place.
As the detectives were entering the apartment, Goldsmith attempted to hide a handgun and a bullet proof vest with the words “police” written on it.
Goldsmith was arrested without further incident and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts each of possession of a weapon and possession of the weapon for unlawful purposes. He was also charged with illegal possession of a bullet proof vest and for possession of an extended clip.
Ambrose commended the quick and cooperative efforts of the members of the Department’s Shooting Response Team and that of the Fugitive Apprehension Team. In just a matter of days, they identified and removed from our streets Goldsmith who shot two teens and would have most likely continued his reign of terror if he hadn’t been caught.
**These are mere accusations against Goldsmith. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. **
