Newark Police Search for Suspect Wanted for Shooting Aquaintance then Sped Away in his Car

Authorities in Newark are on the search for Mr. David Ortiz, 31, of Newark, who they said is a suspect in a shooting that occurred in the 100-block of 2nd Street at approximately 1:35 p.m. Tuesday.

According to detectives from the Newark Police Division’s Major Crime Shooting Response Team, Ortiz was occupying the passenger seat of the victim's black 2016 Nissan Juke when he allegedly produced a gun and opened fire on the victim.

Police said Ortiz then sped away in the vehicle after the victim ran from the scene to get medical assistance for his non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The vehicle that Ortiz allegedly took contained the driver’s personal property police said.

While police are actively searching for Ortiz and the stolen vehicle, they seek the public’s assistance in quickly locating and removing him from city streets.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
