There were no immediate confirmation of fatalities in two shooting incidents in Newark's South Ward Saturday night.
In the first incident, 3-4 reckless gunmen occupying a stolen vehicle fired scores of bullets at unknown targets near 49 Hanford Avenue, prompting police to the scene to investigate just before 9 p.m.
Units arrived at the scene and needed a calculator to tally up over two dozen shell casings and other evidence pointing to possible injuries.
Police officials were alerted of gunfire by a ShotSpotter device that detected 19 rounds, but officers arrived and stretched the crime scene down the block after locating more ballistics.
Authorities say the suspects sped away from the scene in a grey or silver BMW X5 with reported NJ license plate numbers "HFB-2321 stolen from Scarsdale, Ny.
Police believe three of the four suspects were armed and shot up the neighborhood while inside the stolen vehicle.
As of 9:30 p.m., checks at hospitals in the region indicated no victims, but police continued to search area hospitals for potential walk-in gunshot victims.
In the other shooting investigation, officials at University Hospitals alerted police of a gunshot victim who entered the emergency room around 10:35 p.m.
The victim told police investigating the shooting that gunfire struck him near the Exxon Gas station just at the border of Newark's Central and South wards (1 Elizabeth Avenue).
Witnesses said a gunman pulled up in the area and began firing near the gas station. Police arrived and found shell casings and other evidence to confirm a shooting.
According to witnesses, a second victim was loaded in an ambulance and transported to the hospital, but police have not confirmed two victims at this time.
A crime scene unit arrived to initiate the active and ongoing investigation at the hospital.
