Newark's West Ward was the scene of a shooting incident near Fairmount Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, prompting an investigation by police.The incident was initially detected by a ShotSpotter device, which alerted police to gunfire in the vicinity of 194 South 12th Street shortly before 5 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered shell casings at the scene and quickly called in the Shooting Response Team to aid in the investigation. According to witness accounts, a red vehicle was spotted speeding away from the area immediately following the shots.
No injuries have been reported in connection with this incident.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear as police continue to piece together the events leading up to the gunfire.
The search for the individuals involved, including the driver of the red vehicle, is ongoing.
