Newark Police Arrest Man who Fired Gun Stolen from Sayreville

Police in Newark arrested Rashid A. Spates, 27, of Newark, for possession of a loaded handgun last night.

According to Newark authorities, at approximately 11:40 p.m., police responded to the area of South 10th Street and Clinton Avenue for a call of shots fired.

Arriving officers reportedly heard gunshots and observed individuals dispersing, with a male fitting the description of the suspect wanted for the shooting, walking in the area.

Police said, the suspect, Rashid A. Spates, was observed by police entering a residential building on South 11th Street, where they found in his possession a loaded .45 caliber handgun.

Officers immediately arrested Spates and recovered a handgun, that is reported stolen out of Sayreville, NJ.

Police said no injuries were reported during the incident.

Police charged Spates with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Receiving Stolen Property and Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession.

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
