Newark Museum Salutes Dr. Martin Luther King With a Day of Free Events Geared for Families

Officials at the Newark Museum are gearing up for a day to salute Dr. Martin Luther King Junior as they prepare to host families from around the region with a day of film screenings, tours, performances, and activities for all ages.

Celebrate the power of community today at the Newark Museum.

**Film Screenings**

• I Have A Dream Speech

12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 pm

Be inspired by the power of Martin Luther King Jr.’s message, delivered August 28 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.

**• Selma:** Bridge to the Ballot, a production of the Southern Poverty Law Center

1 & 2 pm

The true story of the forgotten heroes in the fight for voting rights—the courageous students and teachers of Selma, Alabama, who stood up against injustice despite facing intimidation, arrests and violence. By organizing and marching bravely, these change-makers achieved one of the most significant victories of the civil rights era.

• Legacy x Lineage: A Spoken Word Odyssey through the Collections curated by Akintola Hanif

Join Akintola Hanif founder and Editor-in-chief of HYCIDE magazine, for a spoken word odyssey through the Museum’s galleries featuring performances by verbal architects: Khalil Jibran, Souletic, Se'lah The-Author, Hapu & Asah Amor.

**• A Musical Tribute :** Gandhi, King- Aspects of Aggression presented by Kevin Maynor

Internationally acclaimed, Newark-based vocalist, Kevin Maynor, combines spoken word and multimedia images in this musical tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Their actual language, about the power of love and non-violent resistance to oppression is a message that resonates for contemporary audiences.

• Civil Rights Teen Tour

Newark Museum’s Explorers, high school students who explore leadership, research and community service opportunities, share their knowledge and contemporary perspectives on the Museum’s newly-reinstalled galleries of art related to the Harlem Renaissance and Civil Rights movements of the 20th century.

**• The Art of the Civil Rights Movement**

1:30 & 2:30 pm

Specially-trained Volunteer Docents encourage deeper exploration of the work of 20th-century African-American artists, including Barbara Chase-Riboud, Mel Edwards, Vincent Smith, Robert Colescott and Ben Jones who are featured in the Newark Museum’s collection.

**Activities for All Ages**

• MLK Jr. Scavenger Hunt

Explore the Museum’s permanent collections of American and Asian art to discover fun facts about Dr. MLK Jr.’s life and travels.

**• Shades of Unity**

Individual self-portraits, each created in a particular color palette, will be combined as one giant image to celebrate the Newark community’s rainbow of diversity.

**• Mini Peace Books**

Create a personal miniature book to keep thoughts and images of peace with you at all times: What does the word “peace” mean? Who is a peaceful person? What does “peace” look like?

**• The Legacy Lives On**

Create a mixed media project that incorporates the words of Dr. MLK Jr.
