Newark Mayor Takes Immediate Actions After Weekend Shootings

Newark

Newark Mayor placed the city in a "state of emergency" as part of his initiative to curb the increase in violence this past weekend.

During a morning press conference Mayor Ras Baraka called the situation “unacceptable” and swift actions are underway.

Baraka added that as of today, the police department will begin operating a new precinct building at 247 16th Avenue in the city’s Central Ward. The new precinct will be staffed with officers from other areas of the city, who will be available to respond to incidents in both the Central Ward and the nearby West Ward which he said, have been the heart of the recent increase in violence.

A “Real Time Crime Center” - which will concentrate on gunshot detection surveillance - is also in the works as another method being implemented, according to officials.

Four people were killed and at least eight others wounded in Newark the last couple of days.
