The Mayor of Newark proposed - during last night's Municipal Council meeting - the creation of a a new public safety department, which would eliminate the city's long standing police and fire director positions.
If approved, the new legislation would eliminate both department's directors leaving one individual as the public safety director.
Initial votes for the two ordinances - the first to create the department and structure, and the second to approve the director's salary at between $176,000 and $190,000 - will take place Wednesday.
An assistant, who will be appointed by the new director, will likely have both police and fire experience, to assist with partnering both departments.
