Newark Man, Teen Arrested for Attempted Carjacking That Prompted Lockout of Belleville Schools

Two schools were placed on lockout while police arrested a Newark man and teen wanted in connection with an attempted carjacking, police said.

According to police, at approximately 8:37 a.m. police responded to the 100 block Garden

Avenue for a report of an attempted carjacking.

Upon arrival, the 62-year-old Belleville man told police that two suspects attempted to take his 2014 Chevy Suburban. Police immediately place to area schools - School 7 and Belleville High School - on lockout as a precaution while police searched for the suspects.

As the suspects attempted to flee the scene the driver lost control and crash into a fence ultimately leading police on a brief foot pursuit.

The suspects - later identified as Taron Truegold, 20, of Newark (driver) and a 16-year-old juvenile - were taken into custody and charged with receiving stolen property, carjacking, conspiracy to commit vehicle theft among other charges.

The incident remains under investigation.

The victim was transported to the hospital with minor hand injuries.
