A Newark man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2024 shooting death of a 50-year-old man who was seated in his wheelchair on Osborne Terrace.

According to information released by Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II, Shaheed Hall, 36, of Newark, received the life sentence following his conviction in the killing of Deshaun Winston.

Prosecutors said Winston was sitting in his wheelchair and speaking with another man on April 28, 2024, when Hall opened fire, striking him twice in the head and once in the neck. Winston died from his injuries.

A jury convicted Hall on July 24, 2026, of first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a gun and second-degree possession of a gun for an unlawful purpose.

Authorities said surveillance video presented during the trial showed Hall and Winston involved in a heated conversation approximately two hours before the shooting. Additional footage showed Hall returning to the area and shooting Winston.

Hall was arrested on June 14, 2024, at the Veterans Courthouse in Newark, where he had appeared in connection with unrelated weapons and drug charges.

Following the jury’s verdict, Hall also pleaded guilty to certain persons not to have weapons and being a persistent offender.

Superior Court Judge Christopher S. Romanyshyn presided over the trial and sentencing.

Hall was also sentenced to an additional eight years for weapons and drug charges, which will run consecutively to the life sentence.

Under New Jersey’s No Early Release Act, Hall must serve 85 percent of the life sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
