Newark Man, Juvenile Charged with Burglarizing Home, Stealing Car in Paramus

The Paramus Police Department announced the arrest of Mr. Assamd Williams, 19, of Newark and a juvenile male, 17, also of Newark for burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

According to police, on Friday, July 15, 2022, at approximately 3:30 pm Assamd Williams and the juvenile male entered a home on Haase Avenue in Paramus.  

Police said the suspects stole a 2020 BMW X-5 from the home's garage.  An auto detailer working at the house observed the burglary and theft and began to chase the suspects in a Honda Accord.

Paramus Police Officers Dan DeRienzo and Don Liu were on patrol In the area of Farview Avenue and Century Road when they observed the BMW driving at a high rate of speed, being followed by the Honda Accord. 

Police said the two vehicles continued down Century Road, onto Route 17 southbound, then into the Garden State Plaza parking lot with the Paramus Officers behind them.

At this point, Paramus Police Communications advised the officers that the BMW had just been stolen and was being followed by a victim.

The vehicles continued through the Plaza and then exited onto Garden State Plaza Boulevard. When the cars reached Paramus Road, the BMW struck the Honda causing the BMW to roll over.  After a brief struggle, Officer Liu and Officer DeRienzo apprehended the two suspects. 

They were transported to Paramus Police Headquarters, where they were booked and processed. Assamd Williams was remanded to Bergen County Jail pending a bail hearing.

Police said the juvenile was turned over to the Essex County Sheriff’s Department on an unrelated outstanding warrant.

The defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
