Newark Rahway

A 24-year-Newark man charged with breaking into Rahway homes and sexually assaulting a 67-year-old woman was denied Pre-trial detention for charges in connection with burglary into multiple homes last year.

Officials say Ramirez who was scheduled to be sentenced on July 5th after pleading guilty for charges stemming from last year’s home invasion in Belleville, where he grabbed a woman and pulled her into another room in her home around 3:45 a.m. but fled after the woman's son woke up and ensued a struggle, alerted his grandfather of incident.

Officials say that Ramirez was ultimately caught and indicted in Essex County on charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault during robbery and burglary. However, as a result of a plea agreement, all charges except the second-degree burglary charge, downgrading charges to third degree. As a result, Judge Alfonse Cipelli denied prosecutors request for pretrial detention for Ramirez who had since remained free.

In the latest incident, Rahway Police said they arrested Ramirez after a joint investigation with the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Unit and Union County Sheriff’s Department revealed his alleged involvement in a burglary and sexual assault of a 67-year-old woman that occurred on East Hazelwood Avenue in Rahway on June 29th.

Police say Ramirez is also suspected of several residential burglaries on the 1000 block of Hazel Place and the 100 block of East Hazelwood Avenue.
