Newark Man Arrested in Perth Amboy Homicide

Perth Amboy New Jersey

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Deputy Chief Larry Cattano of the Perth Amboy Police Department announced today that a 23-year-old Newark man has been arrested and charged with fatally stabbing a Perth Amboy resident in his apartment last December.

Dewayne A. Williams was charged on July 31, 2015 with murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the death on December 7, 2014 of Jean Carlos Morel, 27, of Perth Amboy.

Williams was arrested outside a residence in Newark during an intensive investigation by Detective Gregory Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Detective Sandy Rivera of the Perth Amboy Police Department. Prosecutor Carey thanked the U.S. Marshals Service for its assistance in the investigation and arrest.

Williams is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $750,000 bail.

The investigation determined that Williams stabbed the victim in the victim’s second-floor apartment on Smith Street and fled. It also was determined that on some occasions, the victim had allowed the defendant to stay at the apartment.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3300, or Detective Rivera of the Perth Amboy Police Department at (732) 442-4400.
