Newark Man Accused of Stabbing Belleville Man with Screwdriver Arrested

A 34-year-old Newark man is facing burglary related charges after he reportedly stabbed a Belleville man in the neck with a screwdriver on Mar. 25th.

According to police, at approximately 11:40 p.m. the suspected robber later identified as Banel Cuevas, 34, of Newark, during a struggle stabbed the Belleville man in the neck.

The victim’s roommate came to his aid and wrestled the screwdriver away from Cuevas who fled.

Police said Cuevas was subsequently found behind a home on Church Street and arrested.

EMS treated the victim at the scene but the man declined further medical treatment.

Police charged Cuevas with robbery, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, burglary and drug possession.

According to officials, Cuevas was transferred to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
