Newark-Irvington Township Border Shooting Under Investigation; Male Injured

Newark

Authorities in Essex County are investigating the motive for a shooting that injured a male on the Newark-Irvington Township border.

According to police, the shooting happened Friday evening in the 100 block of Columbia Avenue.

Witnesses said a gunman reportedly followed the 19-year-old victim down the avenue then began repeatedly firing at him near his home on the Irvington side of the border.

Irvington Township Police official said the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and their officers are looking for a dark-colored Jeep that sped away from the scene immediately after the shooting.

Irvington Police said rumors of a second person struck by gunfire were false. Police say a male who ran, after hearing the shots, suffered a hand injury while attempting to jump over a gate.
