A ShotSpotter activation alerted police of a shooting that occurred in the city's University Heights section -Central Ward- Monday night.
According to police, at approximately 10:44 p.m., University Hospital offcials alerted Newark authorities that a male victim entered the emergency room suffering gunshot injuries.
Units reported to the hospital and were told by the victim that a gunman produced a weapon and fired shots in his direction near 18 Hartford Street.
Police canvassing the crime scene located several shell casings and believe that the incident occurred there but have not confirmed the motive for the shooting.
The victim's injuries have not been reported as life-threatening at this time.
Police say the investigation remains active, ongoing and no arrests have been made.
