Newark 5th Grader, Persevere, Excel, Achieve on this Thanksgiving Morning

Newark

On this Thanksgiving morning, our weekend staff highlights the perseverance of Newark 5th grader Ms. Liyasia.

Liyasia wants to be U.S. president one day, and if she’s learned anything while engaged in rigor at the Boys and Girls Club, it’s how to set yourself up for success.

**“To get somewhere, you need to be what you want to be,” she declares.**

This energetic fifth grader loves to engage in fun activities, but she knows that she can get homework assistance from staff at the Boys and Girls Club that she needs to be successful in school with programming like Power Hour, a dedicated hour of homework help.

According to Liyasia, the club's Power Hour session not only enables her to do well in school, but it also ensures that she gets to go home and spend quality time with her family without the burden of having homework left to complete.

Liyasia's mother, Shanique, seconds that testament.

"Because I don't get out of work in time to pick Liyasia and her two siblings up after school, we value the support provided as well the nurturing that the club provides for her children’s social development."

"I can see those skills developing in my children as they get to see others people and learn different things.”

New Jersey, we salute Lyasia for her perseverance.
