Multi-Alarm Fire Burns at Chemical Plant in South Kearny; Residents Ordered to Keep Windows Closed

South Kearny

A multi-alarm fire that tore through a chemical plant in Kearny caused several nearby areas to warn residents to keep their windows closed during the overnight hours.

According to a brief statement from officials, firefighters battled heavy fire that broke out at the Alden Leeds chlorine plant in South Kearny at approximately 10 p.m.

Authorities say hazmat crews assisted in the late night blaze where fire ripped through the building of the plant.

Route 1 and 9 and the Pulaski Skyway were closed in both directions due to the intense smoke in the area officials said.

Emergency officials in the area are telling nearby residents to close their windows because of the possibly dangerous smoke and fumes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
