UPDATE 2:30 am: This is a confirmed deadly shooting.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was called to the scene of a violent shooting at the Stephen Crane Village housing complex in Newark’s North Ward early this afternoon.
Police said the incident happened around 12:45 p.m. in the 60s block of Cedar Lane, where multiple units rushed after reports of gunfire.
Officers arriving at the scene found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
EMS responded and transported the victim to a nearby hospital before he was transferred to University Hospital’s trauma center in Newark for extensive treatment.
Authorities described his injuries as fatal.
As the investigation happened, Belleville Police were asked to secure their side of the municipal border after reports indicated the suspect fled in that direction.
No arrests have been made, and the shooting remains under active investigation.
