Mays Landing Man Charged in September Shooting That Left One Dead, Three Wounded

A Mays Landing man has been charged in connection with the September shooting that killed a man and wounded several others, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.

Officials said Matthew Gonzalez, 27, of Mays Landing, was charged and indicted for First degree Murder of Taufeeq Mitchell, First degree Attempted Murder of Laquine Demby, Second degree Aggravated Assault of Glynda Newman, Second degree Aggravated Assault of Tyjuan O’Neal, Second degree Possession of a Firearm without a Permit, and Second degree Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful purpose.

Police responded to a fight at the Brandywood Apartment Complex in the Township of Hamilton, on September 24, 2017, during which Gonzalez opened fire killing Mitchell and injuring the 3 other individuals.

Authorities arrested Gonazalez and lodged him in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The investigation is a cooperative effort between the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Hamilton Township Police Department. The Egg Harbor City Police Department and the New Jersey State Police also responded to the scene.

These charges are merely an accusation and not proof of guilt. In all criminal cases, a charged defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
