A man suffering from a gunshot wound walked into a Newark police precinct Thursday evening after reporting he had been shot during an attempted robbery in the city’s South Ward.

According to a statement released by the Newark Department of Public Safety, the incident came to light at approximately 5:56 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, when the victim entered the 5th Precinct stationhouse located at 480 Clinton Avenue seeking help.
Authorities said the man told officers he had been double-parked near the intersection of Hedden Terrace and Clinton Avenue when a male suspect approached his vehicle and attempted to snatch money from his hands.
During the encounter, the suspect fired a shot that struck the victim.
Police said the victim sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
After speaking with officers, he was transported from the precinct to University Hospital for treatment. Officials reported that he is currently listed in stable condition.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation.
Authorities have not released additional details about the suspect as detectives continue working to determine exactly what led up to the incident.
