Man Struck by Newark Gunfire Transported to Hospital in Private Vehicle

Police in Newark are investigating a shooting that left a man injured overnight in the city.

According to a preliminary investigation, University Hospital officials contacted police after an injured male victim entered the hospital's emergency room suffering a gunshot wound to his chest at around 2 a.m.

Police units arrived at the hospital and found an unoccupied vehicle with a bullet hole through the windshield according to on the scene reports.

Doctors rushed the victim into surgery where his condition as of 3:30 a.m. could not be confirmed.

Police are attempting to determine if the victim suffered his injuries in the 400 block of South 15th Street where a ShotSpotter activation had police on the scene just before 2 a.m.

Officers canvassing the scene found over a dozen shell casings indicating a gun battle that broke out in the residential community.

The motive for the shooting has yet to be determined.
