A shooting that sent a man to the hospital overnight in Newark has police searching for a suspect.
Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the 100 block of Avon Avenue -near Jeliff Avenue- just before 9:30 p.m. where several police units arrived at the scene to find a conscious and alert male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the back at that location.
EMS transported the victim to University Hospital where doctors treated him for serious injuries.
According to preliminary reports, a male suspect exited a vehicle and began to fire shots in the direction of the victim before speeding away from the scene towards Hunterdon Street.
Police canvassing the scene found and collected several shell casings.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation by the Newark Police Department.
There were no other injuries reported.
