Juan Sanes, 44, of Camden, was sentenced on May 17, 2018, to 50 years in New Jersey State Prison for Conspiracy to Commit Murder. In October 2017, a jury found Juan Sanes guilty of Conspiracy to Commit Murder, five counts of Aggravated Assault, and multiple Weapons Possession offenses for a non-fatal shooting that occurred in 2013.
Assistant Prosecutor Kristen Harberg presented evidence and testimony proving that Juan Sanes fired 17 shots into an occupied vehicle on May 5, 2013 at the request of a friend in an attempt to kill one of the occupants, a woman who was 23 at the time of the incident.
Officials said the shooting, which began around 4 p.m., started on 29th Street and Pierce Avenue when the victim, her 2-year-old daughter, and two others went to get water ice. While at the water ice stand, two men driving a Dodge Ram blocked in the victim’s Buick. The men then got out of the truck and walked toward the Buick with baseball bats. The victim threw her car into reverse in an attempt to escape. The two vehicles then chased each other throughout the Cramer Hill section of Camden as they exchanged gunfire.
During the shootout, Juan Sanes was called by one of the men in the Dodge. They agreed that the driver of the Ram would lure the victim in Sanes direction, and that Sanes would open fire when he saw the Buick drive past. Juan Sanes hid behind a clothing donation bin near the grocery story on 32nd street and Pierce Avenue, and jumped out when the Buick passed him as he fired at it.
Officials said the woman was shot in the hand and another bullet grazed her head. She fortunately survived. The victim’s 2-year-old daughter and two others who were in the Buick were luckily unharmed after Juan Sanes fired at least 17 times in the Buick’s direction, hitting the vehicle multiple times.
According to authorities, Juan Sanes was sentenced by the Honorable Morris G. Smith of the New Jersey Superior Court. Sanes is required to serve at least 42 years of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
