Residents in a rather quiet portion of Irvington Township were awakened by the sound of several loud popping noises then emergency responder vehicles rushing to the scene to investigate Tuesday morning.
Police taped off Laventhal Avenue from Wolf to Union Avenue to investigate a shooting that sent a male to the hospital at approximately 2:15 a.m.
Units arrived at the scene and found a male sitting inside a vehicle suffering multiple gunshot wounds near homes in the area.
EMS rushed the victim to University Hospital where doctors treated serious injuries according to preliminary reports.
Residents said that the peaceful community has not seen a violent outburst like this morning's shooting and believe that the victim or the suspects are not from the area and may have been targeted.
'
"Many of us didn't know anything transpired until we observed Irvington Police units patrolling the community. Besides some sketchy drug sales near the corner store on Union Avenue and Laventhal, the area is pretty cool," a Laventhal Avenue resident said.
The incident remains under investigation.
