Man Found Shot in His Head Overnight in Downtown Newark

Authorities are investigating a violent shooting that left one person critically injured in downtown Newark early Sunday morning.

According to preliminary information, a ShotSpotter device detected multiple rounds of gunfire near 45 Academy Street around 2:10 a.m. 

Police units quickly responded and arrived to find a large crowd gathered at the scene.

Officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to University Hospital for emergency treatment. 

As of early Sunday morning, no further updates on his condition had been released.

A crime scene was established in the area as investigators canvassed for evidence and searched for additional victims. 

No other injuries were reported.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, and no arrests have been announced.
