Man Fires Rounds of Gunfire at Fleeing Victim in Newark's South Ward

Authorities in Newark are investigating a shooting that left a male injured in the city's South Ward on Sunday afternoon.

Residents in the 300 block of Hawthorne Avenue dialed 911 when they observed two males who were engaged in a verbal dispute that turned violent after one of the men pulled a weapon and began to fire rounds in the direction of the other at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Residents say the motorist driving on Hawthorne Avenue were forced to travel in reverse after they observed the armed male began to fire recklessly while the victim sprinted away from the scene.

Fast responding Newark officers arrived and found evidence that a shooting occurred, but a search of the area came back negative for the shooter and the victim according to a statement released by Newark Police officials.

Authorities say at around 2:50 p.m., a male victim entered University Hospital suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound and remains in stable condition.

The motive for the shooting remaains under investgiation.
