Man Charged with Three Murders in Newark, Irvington

A 21-year-old man has been charged for his involvement in the murder of three people in Newark and Irvington in a two week span.

On Nov. 8, 2014, Mumit Marrow, 21, of Newark, Perry Howard, 28, of Bloomfield, Massai Laboo, 23, and Lauren Whatley, 26, both of Irvington, allegedly shot and killed a Ana Satian, a 22-year-old Newark mother, during a cell phone robbery while she visited a friend house on 3rd Street in Newark. Satian succumbed to her injuries the next day at University Hospital.

On May 29, Marrow and the three other defendants were indicted on murder, felony murder, robbery and weapons offenses. The three defendants remain in the county jail in lieu of $1 million, $900,000 and $300,000 bail, respectively.

On Nov. 22, Marrow, Aljumar Derrick, 25, and Altariq Thomas, 29, both of Irvington, were allegedly involved in the murders of Dashawn James, 20, Shaquille Kirkland, 20, both from Irvington.

In the day of the incident, the three men were allegedly driving in a stolen Acura SUV near the intersection of Chancellor Avenue and Osborne Place shortly before 6 p.m. 

According to Essex County Prosecutor's Office, as the vehicle approached the intersection, Derrick and Thomas got out of the SUV and began shooting at James and Kirkland who were walking.

Kirkland was pronounced dead at the scene while James who tried to escape was ultimately shot and died a short time later.

On July 16, Marrow was indicted on conspiracy to commit murder and receiving stolen property charges. Derrick and Thomas were each indicted on conspiracy, murder, receiving stolen property and weapons offenses.

Marrow, Derrick and Thomas remain in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $750,000, $1 million and $2 million bail, respectively.
