Man Arrested for Possession of Sawed-Off Shotgun During Domestic Violence Investigation

Newark

An armed Newark man was arrested on weapons, narcotics and domestic violence charges by Essex County sheriff's officers late Sunday night.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that a 27-year-old female arrived at the department's Patrol Headquarters, located at 525 West Market Street, shortly before midnight on Sunday and reported that she had just been held hostage in her Orange Street apartment by her boyfriend, who was armed with a loaded, sawed-off shotgun.

The female victim also reported that the suspect repeatedly punched her and threatened her,  saying, "I'll kill you in this house."

"Our officers immediately responded to the woman's address and encountered Jaquar Barker, also known as Daquan Barber - Hicks, 24, of Newark," Fontoura said.

"The suspect slammed and deadbolted the door before attempting to flee the scene via a rear window fire escape."

Barker was quickly apprehended by sheriff's officers who had surrounded the building.

"A fully loaded, sawed-off, 16-gauge, Stevens shotgun was recovered at the apartment and Barker was found to be in possession of 24 small containers of 'crack' cocaine," the sheriff added.

Barker was charged with making terroristic threats, false imprisonment, assault, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

The suspect was lodged at the county jail, where he awaits a bail hearing on Sunday's charges.
