Man Arrested for Exchanging Gunfire with Paterson School Security Guard

Passaic County authorities reported that Mr. Robert Carroll, 59,  from Paterson, was arrested in relation to a shooting investigation that took place on May 16 in the area of Madison Avenue and 10th Avenue. 

Police charged Carroll with Attempted Murder First Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon Second Degree, and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose Second Degree.

According to Passaic County Prosecutor Valdes, at approximately 9:00 am. Paterson Police were dispatched to the area of Madison Avenue and 10th Avenue. 

Based on the initial investigation, there was a verbal altercation between an individual, later identified as  Carroll, and a school security guard where gunfire was exchanged.

Prosecutor Valdes said the gunfire hit no individuals.

Carroll was apprehended by Paterson Police on May 16, 2023, at approximately 12:37 pm, at the intersection of 12th Avenue and Rosa Park Boulevard.

The circumstances surrounding the altercation are still open and remain under investigation.

Robert Carroll is scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court on May 18, 2023, at 1:30.

The state will be filing a motion for pre-trial detention the Superior Court Judge will hear.
