Male Shot in the Stomach in Newark's South Ward

Newark

Police officials in Newark are investigating a shooting that seriously injured a male victim in the city's South Ward Wednesday night.

In one of about four shooting incidents that occurred in the city on Wednesday, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the area of Bergen and Scheerer, sending police to the scene to investigate.

Upon arrival, police found a crime scene, but no victims were found at that location.

As officers searched the community, they were notified of a victim suffering a bullet wound in his stomach near 375 Chadwick Avenue.

Police say the victim was fired upon by an armed suspect on Scheerer then ran from the scene when bullets struck him.

EMS transported the victim to University Hospital for treatment and remained hospitalized.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
