Male Shot in Newark's West Ward Seeks Help at NJIT Police Precinct

There were non-life threatening injuries reported for a male who suffered a bullet wound at a location in the city's West Ward Wednesday evening.

According to preliminary reports, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the single-digit block of Chelsea Avenue at approximately 8 p.m.

Several police units arrived at the scene and were told that the victim was transported away in a private vehicle.

Police secured the area and found a shell casing in the vicinity of South Orange Avenue and Isabella, but after a thorough search of the scene, no victims were found.

A short time later, police officials at The New Jersey Institue of Technology notified Newark Police that a male entered their Summit Street headquarters, suffering a gunshot wound in his hand.

Police confirmed that the victim suffered his injury at the West Ward location.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
