Newark Police are searching for a suspect following a violent overnight shooting that left a person with serious injuries in the city's Central Ward.

The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. in the 200 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard after a ShotSpotter device detected over a dozen rounds of gunfire in the 50s block of Muhammad Ali Avenue.
Officers responded swiftly and arrived to find multiple shell casings scattered across the area, prompting them to secure the crime scene with police tape.
While canvassing the scene, authorities discovered a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
The victim was transported to University Hospital, but his exact condition had not been confirmed as of 4:30 a.m., the start of our information session.
Another individual also sustained injuries during the incident, but police have not yet clarified whether that person was struck by gunfire or harmed in another way during the chaos.
The shooter fled the scene and remains at large.
The motive behind the shooting is under investigation, and police have not yet released a description of the suspect.
