EMS rushed a male victim to University Hospital in after police found the victim suffering a gunshot wound to the head in a neighborhood in Newark's West Ward overnight.
According to preliminary reports, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of 138 Sunset Avenue at approximately 12:15 a.m.
Newark West Ward police officers arrived at the scene found the severely injured, unconscious and unresponsive male suffering a gunshot wound at that location.
Police set up a crime scene where they searched for evidence and a possible suspect. Authorities did not immediately confirm the condition of the victim at this time.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
**UPDATE 6:29AM:** Officials at The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has returned an information request confirming a fatality for one (1) male victim for this shots fired incident.
