Shooters arrived in a section of Newark's North Ward and fired about 15 shots at unknown targets around 12:15 a.m.
Police units raced to the area of 2nd Street and 2nd Avenue after a ShotSpotter activated and alerted them of gunfire.
According to police, when officers arrived at the scene, they found a male victim suffering a bullet wound in his back.
EMS transported the unidentified victim to University Hospital for treatment while detectives canvassed the scene for possible additional victims.
Police say there were no other injuries and the suspects fled the scene and are at-large.
