Linden Police Arrest Two in Connection with Rental Scam

Linden

The Linden Police Department announced multiple arrests in connection with a series of rental scams initially reported in August.

According to police, on Feb. 22nd, Allan Betancourt and Myra Sullivan were arrested following a five-month investigation led by Det. David Kother.

Betancourt and Sullivan, who operated under the alias Marcos Cardenas & Mirna Grant, defrauded more than $9,000 from multiple victims by falsely listing apartments for rent on Craigslist.

Both Betancourt and Sullivan were charged with third-degree theft by deception and were released pending a scheduled court appearance on March 6th.

“The public played a critical role in identifying these suspects.” Said Chief Jonathan Parham “The credit for these arrests belongs to the dozens of citizens who cooperated with Detectives to make the identification of these suspects possible.”

The Union Police Department Friday arrested Betancourt for similar scams.

These cases remain under investigation, and Detectives believe that there may be additional victims.

Anyone who has been victimized by these defendants is encouraged to report the incident to the local Police Department where the incident occurred.
