Authorities have arrested a 23-year-old Linden man in connection with a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a Newark resident late last month.
Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel and Linden Police Chief David Hart announced that Yamir Saffold-Davis has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Darrell Sanders.
The shooting happened around 3:26 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, in the 3100 block of Irene Street.
Linden police officers responding to reports of gunfire found Sanders suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but later pronounced dead.
In addition to the murder charge, Saffold-Davis faces charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and aggravated assault.
A joint investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, Linden Police Department, and the Union County Sheriff’s Department identified Saffold-Davis as the suspect.
He was taken into custody in Elizabeth by the U.S. Marshals Service and is currently being held at Essex County Jail.
The case remains under investigation, prosecutors said.
