Gunfire Kills Man at Newark West Ward Chinese Food Restaurant

Newark West Ward police officials and detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are actively investigating a shooting that left one person fatally injured at a Chinese food restaurant on Sunday evening.

According to preliminary police, reports of shots fired had police officers in the 900 block of South Orange Avenue -near Stuyvesant Avenue- at approximately 10 p.m. where officers arrived at the scene found a male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.

At 5:45 a.m., The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed to our Metro Morning weekday crew that the victim died as a result of the shooting and the investigation is active and ongoing with no suspects arrested.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting at this time. It is not clear if the victim was shot on the street then ran into the Chinese store or if the gunshot victim worked at the restaurant.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
