Jersey City Man That Shot Himself Gets Hit with Additional Charges

An 18-year-old city man who shot himself in the leg last month is facing additional charges, according to authorities.

Tariq S. Gathers appeared in Central Judicial processing court in Jersey City via video link for additional charges including possession of a bag of suspected heroin with intent to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of School 15.

On August 18, police responded to a report of a man shot at Clinton Avenue and Sackett Street at 10:22 p.m.

While at the scene, a revolver was recovered. A short time later, a man - Gathers - suffering a gunshot wound had been dropped off at Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health.

Gathers told the officers he shot himself and had dropped the gun. When asked to describe the weapon, Gathers said "I don't know, it was a big-ass revolver and it went off," according to police report.

He was later charged with possession of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and tampering with evidence.

His bail was set at $100,000 cash or bond.

Further investigations led police to the car that dropped off Gathers at the hospital. The driver told police he drove his cousin to the hospital after hearing his cousin scream and limping through an area parking lot.

The car, which had blood on its front passenger seat, was impounded.
