Investigation Underway Into Fatal Jersey City Fire

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department are investigating a fatal fire that occurred on Monday, July 10. According to officials, shortly before 6:50 a.m., the Jersey City Fire Department received a 911 call for a fire in the 200s block of Stegman Street.

Upon arrival, first responders located the heavy fire in the front of the structure.

During suppression efforts, firefighters located an unresponsive male, tentatively identified as Christopher Williams, 54, of Jersey City, inside the residence.

Officials say he was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just after 7:30 a.m.

A second individual, a 41-year-old female, was injured while escaping the fire through a window. She was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Jersey City Medical Center and has since been released.

A preliminary investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force determined the fire originated in the front enclosed porch.

The Cause remains under investigation at this time.

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is actively investigating with assistance from the Jersey City Fire Department.
