Institute of Forensic Science New Jersey State Toxicology Laboratory Receives Accreditation

Newark

Based on results of a recent on-site inspection, the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded full accreditation to the Institute of Forensic Science New Jersey State Toxicology Laboratory, Law Enforcement Drug Testing Program, Newark.

During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care, inspectors examined the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examined laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management. The federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, which began in the early 1960’s, as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program.

The laboratory’s acting director, Robert Havier, PhD, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. The Institute of Forensic Science NJ State Toxicology Lab is now one of more than 7,700 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

“My staff and I have worked hard to gain this recognition of the high quality of work we have always provided. We will closely adhere to all CAP requirements in order to maintain the designation of a CAP accredited laboratory and continue to improve and expand our vital service to all of the residents of New Jersey,” said Dr. Havier.

In his role as New Jersey State Medical Examiner, Dr. Andrew L. Falzon oversees the State Toxicology Laboratory. He commended the laboratory’s staff for the consistency with which they routinely exceed performance standards and expectations.

“I’m extremely proud of the laboratory staff for their hard work and commitment to excellence,” said Dr. Falzon.
