Bloomfield

Today, Sheriff Armando Fontoura announced that mile marker 11.1 on NJ I-280 will be adorned with road signs honoring the memory of fallen Essex County Police Officer Daniel J. Smith.

The Sheriff held a ceremony this afternoon to unveil the new road signs, which are already posted on the highway.

Officer Daniel J. Smith, a resident of Bloomfield at the time of his death, was only 27-years-old when he was tragically gunned down during a traffic stop on September 17th, 1984 right at mile marker 11.1 on I-280.

Officials say his killer, Douglas Parson, is currently serving a life sentence at East Jersey State Prison. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the tragic events.
