Highland Park Man Beats 60-Year-Old Gas Attendant in Linden Robbery

Linden

A Highland Park man was arrested Sunday morning after beating a 60-year-old gas station attendant during a robbery, authorities said this morning. Police say they responded to the shell Gas Station, 33 W. Edgar Road, on a report of a fight in-progress Sunday morning at approximately 4:17 a.m., Captain James Sarnicki said. Arriving officers observed a man, later identified as Garrett Jamir Eato, 24, of Highland Park, standing over the 60-year-old attendant repeatedly punching him in the face. Officers placed Eato in handcuffs, Sarnicki added. The attendant told the officers that he was counting money in the booth before placing it in a drop safe when Eato forced his way in and attempted to take the money from his hands.  A struggle then ensued which carried over outside the booth. The attendant was treated at the scene by the Fire Department ambulance for an injured eye and a cut on his hand, said the captain. Eato was arrested and charged with robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of synthetic marijuana.  He is being held at the Union County Jail in lieu of $125,000 bail pending a court date set for December 12th, added Sarnicki. Officers were later approached by employees of the 7-11 store adjacent to the gas station who told them that Eato had been in their store just prior to the incident demanding a ride to New Brunswick and acting in a disorderly manner.
