Gunshot Wound Victim Self-Transported to University Hospital in Newark; Two Shooting Scenes Investigated

Newark

Police officials in Newark are attempting to determine if a shooting victim who entered a hospital in the city suffered his injuries after gunfire erupted in a South Ward neighborhood or during a gun battle that occurred at a location in the city's Central Ward on Sunday night.

According to preliminary reports, a male victim who self-transported to University Hospital shortly before 10:35 p.m. suffering a gunshot wound reported to police that he was shot in the 100 block of Chadwick Avenue shortly before arriving at the hospital.

Police investigating the incident found shell casings at the Chadwick Avenue location, but authorities are also checking to see if the victim may have been involved in an apparent shoot out that occurred at the Betty Shabazz Housing complex where gunmen fired nearly a dozen rounds at that location.

The victim's injuries were not immediately reported as life-threatening.

Police say the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
