Police in Irvington Township are investigating a shooting that sent a woman to the hospital this afternoon.
According to preliminary reports, gunfire rang out on Springfield’s Avenue and 21st Street and around 3:30 p.m. sending police to the scene where they found a woman inside a liquor store suffering apparent gunshot wounds.
Witnesses said they saw the suspect chase the woman a short distance then he began to fire shots at her.
Witnesses say the man then ran from the scene through an empty lot near a hair salon on the Newark border.
The condition of the woman could not be confirmed.
Police blocked traffic on Springfield Avenue, in both directions, from 20th Street on the Newark border to Avon Avenue for the investigation.
There are no arrests immediately reporter.
**IPD UPDATE 5:41 pm This is a confirmed Irvington investigation with the victim hospitalized in stable condition. The victim suffered her injury by gunfire at the hands of a male suspect inside a business in the 700 block Springfield Avenue. Police say one other person suffered a minor non-shooting injury.**
