Gunfire Strikes Woman in Newark's Central Ward

Police in Newark are on the search for suspects responsible for firing multiple shots in the direction of a woman that struck and injured her in the city's Central Ward Saturday night.

According to a preliminary investigation, a ShotSpotter activation alerted police of over a dozen rounds of gunfire that rang out in the vicinity of 276 15th Avenue around 8:19 p.m.

Police officers arrived and found a female victim suffering a bullet wound in her hand at that location.

Offcials say after officers canvassed the area, they found that suspect sprayed the area with gunfire after officer found shell casing near the intersection of 14th Avenue and Hayes Street.

A car was struck by two stray bullets struck according to police. There were no occupants inside the car.

Police say the female victim was treated for injuries at University Hospital and expected to fully recover.

According to police, the vehicle that the suspects fled the scene in was recovered unoccupied in the 600 block of 15th Avenue.

There were no arrests reported.
