Gunfire Strikes Newark Mayor's West Ward Campaign Office

Newark

Authorities are investigating a Wednesday evening shooting that caused damage to a campaign office operated by the committee to elect the current Mayor of Newark during his run for office.

Police responded to the 1000 block of South Orange Ave. on reports of shots fired Wednesday evening at around 8 p.m.

Arriving units located several shell casings at the scene where damaged was done to the campaign office and at least one other business on South Orange Ave.

Cops were observed going business to business checking for evidence during their investigation. Authorities believe that several men in the area began to exchange rounds of gunfire before fleeing the scene.

It is not clear if anyone was inside the office during the shooting or if there were any immediate reports of injuries.

Residents and business owners in the area said that the office is often occupied but weren't sure if anyone was there during the shooting.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.

There were no arrests reported.
